I believe that 24 inch bar stools are a fairly modern development in the area of bar stools. Historically, there were only 30 inch bar stools. The 30 inch bar stool dates back hundreds of years. The standard height was set based on sitting at old English style pubs. When I first got into the bar design business all of the stools were generally standardized. They were the same heights, and for the most part one of only a few styles and designs. You would walk into just about any pub and not be able to tell them apart if you only had the bar stools to go by. Now there are hundreds of different types of bar stools that are manufactured and commercially available.

For the most part there are now two standard bar stool height: there are 24 inch bar stools and 30 inch bar stools. The higher 30″ bar stools are found in commercial venues such as pubs, night clubs and restaurants. Both the 24 inch and 30 inch bar stools models are commonly found in residential settings. With hundreds of different models to choose from you can make your bar area as unique as you want.

During the 60s and 70s, the use of bars in private homes was generally limited to basement family rooms or possibly outside on the pool deck. The stools found around the pool tended to be made out chrome or resin. For obvious reasons, the stools needed to be water resistant. Bar stools found in the basement recreation rooms tended to be wooden with a swivel seat and a chair back. These stools were stained a dark natural walnut or oak color. All of these older style bar stools were primarily designed for use by fully grown adults.

In the mid-90s kitchen renovations were really becoming popular. Kitchen renovation shows were popping up on TV. New glossy kitchen renovation magazines were being launched. It was beginning to dawn on people that the kitchen was an integral and very important part of the family home. Today kitchens are still about function but they are also about style and lifestyle. Today, it is all about granite counters, stainless appliances, cappuccino makers, marble back splashes, and breakfast bars and breakfast bar stools. Breakfast bar stools are generally 24 inch bar stools.

The idea of the purpose of a kitchen changed radically. A kitchen wasn’t just about making food or doing the dishes. A kitchen became a place to enjoy family time. The breakfast bar became the ideal place to read the paper or do homework.

I was so lucky to be able to design my own kitchen when we built our home. I decided that I really wanted a huge island in my kitchen to use for quick meals. What I found is that this is the center area in our home. When we have company over, we usually gather around the island because that is where the food and beverages are. We started off with some cheaper bar stools, but they really wore out quickly. Then we purchased some metal bar stools and love them. We went with 4 stools as that is what fits under the island, but then I decided that we needed some more for when company comes. We keep the extras in the basement, but always get them out when we have company. This allows everyone to sit comfortably around the island.

Reto is really in for decor. I was in a house where they had their kitchen done in retro. Remember the old style bar stools that were metal, attached to the floos, and had vinal cusions for the seating? This is what they had in their home. It remimded me of Happy Days tv show. We made a rec room in our church for the youth group. I decided that it would be great to get a high table an put some bar stools round it for different activities. I have found that the kids take these stool and move them all around the room. They love them. They put them by the ping pong table when watching a game, by the tv when playing playstation, and around the table when eating. These stools have been used so much by the youth and they love them.

Metal Bottom Bar Stools

The bottom of my stools are metal. I love the stool itself. There is a rubber black ring around the bottom of the stool which keeps the stool from scratching the floor. My problem is that the rubber has started to get old and crack. I have fixed it with black McGuyver tape so far. I am wondering if there is something that I can purchase to put on the bottom of these stools so they don’t scratch the floor.

I bought a roomy kitchen bar table in order to try to get my family together more often. It actually worked!
