I once saw a working phone booth, with door and all, incorporated into a living room in an interior design magazine. I am currently planning designs for my basement-party-lounge room, and think this design element would be a great conversation piece for guests. (also serves a purpose) Please post any links to articles or pictures of something similar to this, thanks!
You can do anything you want design wise as long as you are able and willing to pay for it. I think the concept would be great fun in a rec room but not a living room. If you can find one all you would have to do is have it wired to your telephone lines.
Where online can i get interior design ideas and inspiration?
I am moving soon and need ideas.
What websites do you use for inspiration when decorating your home??
What online shops do you use?? (I’m in the UK)
Also any tips on moving house?
Thanks
There are a couple of websites you could look at:

How To Renovate Kitchens Inexpensively
If your cabinets are looking slightly off, applying a new color by painting them can really change the whole look of your room. Go step further and change the hardware as well. There are gorgeous and affordable pulls and handles that will look incredible against newly painted cabinets. You can also go a step further and use molding on the edges of cabinets.
In any kitchen, the backsplash attracts the eye. And, when it’s old or dated, it can really put a damper on the whole room. The fact is that patterns on ceramic tiles quickly become outdated. So, you can change them yourself.
The truth is, if you do it on your own, it’ll only cost you a couple hundred dollars. Or, you can leave them in tact and paint them.
In order to have a real impact, he should focus on the lighting. You certainly have many choices when it comes to lighting and styles of the fixtures. For one thing, you would definitely benefit from installing lighting that is mounted under the cabinets. It will really help you when preparing meals, but it will also look incredible.
The ceiling mounted fixtures should also be updated. Again, this is not an expensive item. Try to choose a finish that matches the look of the entire room. It will surely breathe new life into it.
Upgrading Your Home With Lighting
Not all track lighting is created equally however. There are some forms of track lighting that can hang down, and these are known as pendulum lights. You would typically find these at restaurants hanging over tables, though they do can also make a great lighting system for pool tables as well.
If you want to make a room appear bigger than it actually is, a possibility is to utilize a mirror. When someone walks into a room, their first impression will be what they see, and if the first thing they see is a mirror, then they might think the room is larger. You might be amazed at how long this impression actually lasts.
To complement the mirrors, you can install extra lighting around them. This can be a great idea if you are building a home entertainment area, though you need to be careful doing this. If what you are creating is a TV area, then excessive use of mirrors could draw attention away from the television.
When you need a brighter room, fluorescent lighting fixtures can be good. Now you are probably thinking of those boring tube lights at work, but now there are many more styles available for your home. In fact the new CFL bulbs can screw into a number of lighting fixtures. An added attraction is that they can use less electricity than regular bulbs.
There are a variety of low energy alternative lighting fixtures available. These can be an important part of your lighting planning, especially if you need quite a bit of additional lighting. Proper planning and consideration of this can prevent a substantial rise in your electric bill.
Lighting can be a good way to upgrade your home without spending too much money. You can get more ideas from knowledgeable staff at your local lighting store and of course from the internet. You can achieve the results you want even if it entails just a little more work.
Key Principles Of Interior Design
Balance: This entails the most appropriate spread of different items in an area. It is necessary to position objects with comparable visual appeal at carefully chosen positions to attain that perfect balance from a specific point. Balance can be of three types. The most basic type is symmetrical balance, which is very straightforward to attain. The next is asymmetrical, which requires a lot of imagination, but is increasingly preferred. A radial balance is the third kind, which is achieved by defining a center and placing objects around that.
Proportion: This relates to the relative dimensions of objects in an area. It is crucial that items in a room go well together in terms of their sizes. The absence of proportion will make some pieces of furniture stand out, while certain others will be left overshadowed, which will significantly hamper the overall attractiveness of the room.
Focus: A focal point in interior design of a room is important for its appeal. Focal items can be anything ranging from a furniture article to an attractive painting or some other art work. This object must make an impression on the observer and also fall in line with the design of the rest of the room. It must look attractive, but not look out of the scheme of things.
Rhythm: This is again a necessary factor of good interior design. The design must appear to flow as per a pattern from one point to another. This can be attained through the use of arcs, patterned walls or ceilings, through decorations or furnishings, and through alternating colours or designs.
Interior designing of a space will be consistent if these basic guidelines are kept in mind. It is recommended to hire a good interior design professional who can take care of all these factors and also assist you with the details.
A Guide to the Modern Kitchen
Kitchens have been located just about everywhere throughout time – from a corner in the home during Colonial times, to outbuildings in the south and special, separate “summer kitchens” in colder climates. Modern kitchens are now considered the heart of a home. Contemporary kitchens are not only thought of as a place to cook, but a place to visit and work together with friends and family as well as a comfortable place to spend time.
options include Lazy Susan cabinets, stacked shelving, wheeled shelving, hidden storage shelves and deeper and more functional cabinet sizes. Today’s manufacturing materials are made to last. Custom finishes applied to shelving and storage areas ensure easy maintenance.
Cutting edge appliance manufacturers are now developing more energy efficient and safer appliances for use in modern kitchens. Dishwashers, refrigerators and trash compactors are as attractive as they are functional with options that allow them to blend in with the kitchen decor. With the availability of self-cleaning features and easy maintenance, state-of-the-art appliances are more compact, more convenient and more efficient than ever.
Advances in cabinetry and storage have made it possible to store more in the kitchen. Stacked and rolling shelving, Lazy Susans, turntable shelves and deep well-crafted cabinets all make the most of available space even in small kitchens. Cooking islands are popular and generally include cabinets under the counter top.
The kitchens of the 1940s and 1950s grew from what was usually, during Colonial times, a corner space in the home called the “hearth.” In southern parts of the United States, the kitchen was often in an outbuilding where slaves did the cooking. Northern homes sometimes added a “summer kitchen” in a separate building where canning and other summer cooking activities took place. As the electrical grid and gas lines were built into more and more places in the United States, the kitchen was moved into a small room in the home. Built more for function than convenience, traditional kitchens are generally small, with little counter and cabinet space.
Modern kitchen appliances no longer resemble their predecessors. Early stoves were heavy, large and fueled by wood. Coal and kerosene cook stoves were next developed and, as the nation’s infrastructures grew, the first electric and gas stoves were advanced. Today’s ovens and stoves are more compact and use less energy than earlier versions. There are also more recent technologies such as convection and microwave ovens that decrease cooking times, thereby using less power.
Because of today’s busy lifestyles, it is required that modern kitchens offer more than function. In addition to space saving storage and more efficient room layouts, cabinetry and appliances are easier to clean and maintain. Energy-efficient appliances are less expensive to run and have added safety features. While the traditional kitchen paved the way for today’s kitchen, modern kitchens offer more comfort and ease of use than their predecessors.
Bar Stools That Won’t Bust Your Budget
There are lots of classy yet cheap bar stools out there. But how do you find them? There are lots of expensive options out there – you can find bar stools for as much as $375 per stool – but you can do better than that. Sometimes you have to be resourceful in your search.
First, make an assessment of the décor of your bar. Is it sleek and high-tech or more conventional? Once you know what kind of bar stool you’re looking for, your search will get a whole lot easier.
Give some thought as to what kind of design and shape of bar stool you would like. For instance, do you want your bar stools to be able to swivel or not? How tall do you want them to be? There are lots of cool ones out there, but it really helps to have an idea of how you want your bar to look in advance and this will save you money (and time).
From there, do a little searching on the Internet. This will give you an idea as to what’s out there and how much it costs. Many people like to buy bar stools on the Internet because you can visit lots of websites in a fraction of the time it would take you to visit as many stores. There are many online stores that sell nothing but bar stools, and those are a lot of fun to check out!
Make sure you check out some of the online furniture liquidation sales, which sell discontinued models and used showroom items. Some of these liquidation sites will also let you stop by and examine their bar stools as well, in case you’re squeamish about buying something sight unseen.
Another possibility is to go to websites featuring furniture sales in your area, such as Craigslist. There are many restaurants and bars that go out of business and have to unload their furniture in a hurry to fulfill the terms of their filing for bankruptcy. Believe me, their owners will thank you for helping them out of a jam, and it’s an easy way to get inexpensive bar stools.
Estate sales are another great way to get bar stools. In these kinds of situations, you will find motivated sellers who are willing to negotiate. Touring the furniture showrooms in your area is great as well, if you’re just trying to get an idea of what’s out there. But you can usually expect to pay top dollar at these places. And it’s a time-intensive task.
You can expect to visit ten or more stores and see nothing you want at prices you probably don’t want to pay. The great thing about touring stores is that you can collect designer names and names of models of bar stools you really like, then Google them when you get home to see who carries those models for less money.
If the prime factor in selecting bar stools is cost, you should take into consideration that the fancier the bar stool, the more money you’re going to pay. So if you’re just looking for a place for people to park their butts, and you don’t really care beyond that, you might consider very simply-made bar stools of wood!
Further along these lines, consider bar stools made of unusual materials, such as bamboo. Would you like to make your bar area look like a tiki hut? Then look no further! There are many import furniture stores that can help you locate inexpensive, fun bar stools, and they’re definitely worth checking out.
If you’ve exhausted everything else and you can’t find what you want, you do have another option. Have you checked out Ikea? They carry bar stools! (Who woulda thunk it?) Ikea has one bar stool that looks exactly like an upholstered folding chair with extremely long legs.
The warehouse stores all have bar stools as well – Wal Mart has them, for example. But you may find them somewhat lacking in quality. If you plan on owning your bar stools for some time to come, this may not be the best place(s) to look.

Elegance of Wrought Iron Wine Racks
Wine racks are designed as storage areas for your wines, bottles and even glassware. Usually it has separate sections to allow spaces between bottle and let air circulate among them. It is best for wines to be stored at a stable temperature and humidity away from direct exposure to light and heat. Placing them in an appropriate temperature will prevent ruining the wines and drying the corks out. When the corks dry out, it will result to spoiling the flavor and taste of the wine.
There are different types of wine racks you can choose from to suit your home. But one durable type would be the wrought iron wine racks. This would totally fit a modern-style home and would bring a different edge to your decor. The other popular ones are those that are made of different wood like oak, pine, cherry, and mahogany.
Wrought iron is a material used for both indoor and outdoor furniture and also home decor items like pot racks, tables, gates, and even wine racks. Wrought iron wine racks tend to be unique and can be painted to suit the theme of your room. This is also advisable for displaying purposes of your wine rather than wine aging.
Wine racks are now available in different shapes, designs and materials. But whether your wine rack is made of metal or other materials, be sure to know the proper storage of your wines because the taste of your wine is what matters most. For an elegant look, wrought iron wine racks are your best bet. They have engaging features with sleek finishes and would be a very good decorative item in your living room or kitchen.
Solar Power and Going Green in Your Home
Solar energy harnesses the power of the sun. When sunlight hits photovoltaic cells (they look like large computer chips made of silicon) the photons in the sunlight make all electrons to be released from the silicon. If you can catch those electrons, you get electricity.
Think of it like this: you are playing billiards (shooting pool) and you hit the cue ball into another ball. What happens? The white ball bounces making that other ball into motion as well.
When sunlight hits the solar cell, it bounces off and pushes the electron in motion. Electricity is made of electrons. The more electrons you can push in motion-and rein-in-the additional electricity you can generate.
For an great article on solar energy and other green energy, visit this page at NASA http://www.nasa.gov/centers/ames/greenspace/clean-energy.html
How does this help you in your home? The government is pushing hard for solar energy. $19 billion dollars has been set aside to help advocate solar energy throughout our country. The federal government as well as other state governments and utilities, will literally pay you to start using solar energy.
Why do they do this? First, we want to reduce our dependency on foreign oil. Second, burning fossil fuel is terrible for the environment. Solar energy, on the other hand, is completely clean. There are no byproducts. There are no carbon emissions. It is a very clean and pure method of generating electricity. Third, the government wants to develop the solar industry in this country which may create more and more jobs and opportunities.
Solar energy is not inexpensive, however. Solar energy for a home may cost $20,000. Do not stop reading this article! There is great news. The government and utilities may rebate you up to 70% of the cost of the system. In this example, you would get tax credits and rebates for around $14,000. The net price to you is $6000. If you were to finance this, you can pay about $50-$75 each month. You may say this much or more in your electric bill! Even if you don’t, you not only done something great for the environment, but have also increased the value of your house by about $20,000! If you’re going to resell your house, this not only adds value of nature home more desirable than other houses on the market.
There are also laws preventing local government from increasing your taxes when you add solar energy to your house. We cannot give you specific tax advice-you must speak with your accountant or attorney.
